Charley Harper: Gone, But Never Forgotten

Cincinnati’s beloved Charley Harper, world-famous artist, died on this day in 2007. He will forever be missed.

Edie Harper: Her Biblical Works and a Little Love Story

Charley Harper and Edie McKee met cute. The year was 1940, and they were fresh-faced youngsters enjoying their first day at art school. Fast forward seven years, to a world newly released from war: with their respective patriotic service behind them, and their education finally finished, they married. They were never apart again.

The Harpers were accomplished artists. Although Charley, who died in 2007, gets more press than Edie, who passed away in 2010, make no mistake: she was an extraordinarily gifted woman whose mastery of multiple mediums was, and remains, nothing short of breathtaking.

As the 1970s approached, Edie turned her keen abilities to portraying scenes from the Bible. As delightfully whimsical as her other work, these Biblical illustrations are some of her best known and loved pieces. That she shared her husband’s gift for visual distillation is never more obvious than when looking at this series.

We are excited to announce that our Montgomery location is hosting a show of Edie Harper Biblical illustrations. If you are in the area, be sure to stop by to see them in person! For those of you who cannot make it in, we’ve assembled a gallery of some of the images that will be on view. Enjoy!

Magic of the City II by Bev Erschell

Bev Erschell has released a new print. Titled Magic of the City II, it features an updated Cincinnati skyline, complete with the Queen City Tower in the background. Although you’ll immediately recognize it as an Erschell, the color palette is more vibrant (with greens, blues and oranges dominating, rather than her signature yellows) and the strokes are thicker. As usual, it is a lovely and distinctive evocation of our beloved city.

World Choir Games Poster by C.F. Payne

Renowned Cincinnati artist C.F. Payne had the honor of creating the official poster for the 2012 World Choir Games, currently being held in our beautiful city. Featuring performers of many nationalities before a background of Queen City landmarks, rendered in his distinctive style, it simultaneously represents local and international pride, sportsmanship and camaraderie. Kudos to one of our favorite Cincinnatians for accepting and surpassing such an important challenge.

Cincinnati Welcomes the World Choir Games*

Cincinnati has officially welcomed the Seventh World Choir Games. Although the Opening Ceremonies were held last night (to the tune of more than 11,500 spectators), the competitive action starts today! Choirs from 22 states and even more countries will compete in more than 23 categories over the next ten days. We are excited to be located in the midst of all of the action, which affords us the opportunity to connect with people from all over the world. Check back often, as we continue to blog about this once-in-a-lifetime event!

* Cincinnati is the first American location of the games, which are held every two years. How cool is that?

Kate Albert: An Artist with a Unique Vision of Cincinnati

We cannot say enough nice things about the work of Cincinnati-based artist Kate Albert. Her highly individual style is instantly recognizable, making her representations of Cincinnati and its landmarks quite unlike anything else on the market. Her roots in The Queen City run deep: she’s a life-long local and a graduate of The University of Cincinnati. Kate is an artist to watch out for: that’s a pretty easy task these days, as her work is becoming increasingly available and acclaimed.

We are proud to carry three signed prints based on her original acrylics.

It’s in the Details: Ursula J. Brenner #1

We love receiving shipments of new art; it’s like getting an embarrassment of gorgeous gifts on your birthday. After eagerly opening package after package, we now have a dozen Ursula J. Brenner originals hanging on our front wall. Whatever the medium employed-oils, pastels, acrylics-you’ll love the complex details found in all of her work. In an effort to translate the richness of that work through a computer screen, we’ll focus on one piece at a time; by allowing the intricacies to shine through, you’ll have a better understanding of the fullness of color and texture contained in all of her paintings.
